We could be set for huge pops at this Sunday’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view.
From returning wrestlers to just being a big name in the match, the WWE Universe have been sent wild with certain entrants in the past.
Ronda Rousey and CM Punk have been rumoured to make their WWE returns this weekend, which would definitely provoke a big reaction from the live crowd.
Rousey was last seen in WWE at WrestleMania 35, while Punk has not wrestled since 2014.
Below, talkSPORT.com looks at previous WWE wrestlers who have received the loudest Royal Rumble pops.
LATEST WRESTLING NEWS
Goldberg (2017)
Goldberg declared his participation in the Royal Rumble match in November after shocking the world by beating Brock Lesnar in less than two minutes at Survivor Series.
The Royal Rumble match was an opportunity for Lesnar to get revenge against a fired up Goldberg.
However, things did not go to plan. Goldberg came out to a huge roar from the live crowd and ended up eliminating Lesnar.
The Beast eventually got the better of Goldberg when he beat him for the Universal Championship at WrestleMania 33.
Roddy Piper (2008)
Piper was coming towards the end of his career as a wrestler with sporadic appearances for WWE.
His surprise Royal Rumble return was met with huge cheers from the crowd as he marched down to the ring and attacked fellow veteran Jimmy Snuka, before being eliminated by Kane after just one minute.
Rob Van Dam (2009)
In the midst of competing on the indie scene, Van Dam was an unannounced entrant in the Royal Rumble match.
He lasted just under 14 minutes and was eliminated by Chris Jericho.
Van Dam continued to work away from WWE until returning on a full-time basis in 2013.
Diesel (2011)
After a lengthy absence from WWE, Kevin Nash, who was portrayed as Diesel for the first time since 1996, returned at the Royal Rumble to a huge ovation.
Diesel, who had signed a five-year WWE Legends contract, was thrown over the ropes by Wade Barrett.
Edge (2010)
No one expected Edge to participate in the Royal Rumble match after injuring his Achilles a few months prior to the event.
However, he returned at the Rumble to send the live crowd wild.
Edge won the match and went on to face Jericho for the World Heavyweight Championship in a losing effort at WreslteMania 26.
Triple H (2016)
Triple H, acting as an authority figure on WWE TV, had forced Roman Reigns to defend his World Heavyweight Championship as the no.1 entrant in the Royal Rumble match.
And there was a huge pop when The Game’s entrance music hit as the final participant of the bout.
He eliminated Reigns, before doing the same to Dean Ambrose to win the world title.
It was the second Royal Rumble triumph of Triple H’s career.
Trish Stratus (2018)
There was a lot of talk of Stratus competing in the first ever women’s Royal Rumble match leading up to the event.
But as woman after woman appeared in the match, a section of fans would have been forgiven for giving up hope of a Stratus return.
However, the former Divas champion’s music was met with a huge cheer from the crowd as she came out as entrant no.30.
Stratus had an impressive six-minute showing, eliminating Nia Jax, Natalya and former foe Mickie James, before being tossed over by Sasha Banks.
Bubba Ray Dudley (2015)
Bubba Ray Dudley made a one-off appearance at the Royal Rumble after a 10-year absence.
He was entrant no.3 and was buoyed on by a jubilant live crowd as he eliminated The Miz and R-Truth, the match’s first two competitors.
AJ Styles (2016)
Undoubtedly, one of the biggest pops in Royal Rumble history came through AJ Styles.
The Phenomenal One was a free agent, before making his WWE debut in the Royal Rumble match.
Styles was entrant no.2 and lasted for a respectable 29 minutes. Today, he is a household name in WWE.
John Cena (2008)
Cena injured his pectoral muscle in October and was a major doubt for the Royal Rumble pay-per-view.
Potentially having one of your biggest wrestlers injured during WrestleMania season would have been a big blow for WWE.
However, the noise from the crowd almost took the roof off Maddison Square Garden when Cena entered at no.30.
Cena won the match, which earned him a Championship opportunity at WrestleMania 24.
Becky Lynch (2019)
Lynch was arguably WWE’s most popular superstar at the time of the Royal Rumble, so it was a shock to see her fail to defeat Asuka for the SmackDown Women’s Championship in the opening match of the pay-per-view.
Lana came out as entrant no.28, but she failed to make it down to the ring due to an ankle injury which she suffered during the pre-show.
Lynch then stormed out and pleaded with Fit Finlay to replace Lana, and after much deliberation, The Man got her wish as the crowd popped at the decision.
Lynch won the match by eliminating Charlotte Flair, and at WrestleMania, she pinned Rousey to win the Raw and SmackDown Women’s titles.
