WWE SummerSlam goes down on August 21 from the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas and it’s the first full stadium show WWE have done since the coronavirus pandemic took hold in early 2020.
The company ran shows from the Performance Center to begin with and eventually, at SummerSlam last year, they moved to the ThunderDome where fans were a part of shows on LED screens.
WWE returns to touring in mid-July with Money in the Bank being the first pay-per-view that welcomes fans back.
SummerSlam follows and, as you can imagine, WWE are trying to load that show up full of their biggest stars.
WrestleVotes is reporting that WWE wants Roman Reigns and John Cena to main event the show.
”WWE is 100% attempting to make SummerSlam this year’s WrestleMania,” according to WrestleVotes’ sources, who tell the Twitter account that “all resources will be tapped into.”
Votes says WWE hasn’t decided, but they believe the company wants Roman Reigns vs. John Cena to headline the show.
Florida sports reporter Jon Alba confirmed with multiple sources that indeed, Reigns vs Cena is “the targeted main event at this moment.”
Cena has made no secret of his desire to get back to WWE. The 16-time world champion wanted to be at WrestleMania 37, but his filming schedule and quarantine regulations would have made it impossible.
“I really, really want to get back to WWE,” Cena told the Indian Express. “I really want audiences to get back to WWE. Heck I’m with everybody I think around the world saying I just want the world to get back to normal.”
Cena and Reigns feuded once before back in 2017 at the No Mercy pay-per-view. Reigns got the win on that occasion, but it’s most remembered for Cena giving Reigns a lesson in promos on live television.
Reigns is a different man. The Tribal Chief is the best character in professional wrestling today in many eyes and Reigns has ascended to an entirely different level than before.
It would certainly be the banner match WWE is looking for and a victory for Reigns again could set him nicely on the path for The Rock, a man Cena beat and lost to at WrestleMania.
