Roman Reigns is on the run of his life as the Tribal Chief in WWE.
For years WWE chairman Vince McMahon was desperate to make Reigns the face of the company, a position the likes of Hulk Hogan, Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock and more recently John Cena had filled.
Reigns was his man, but the fans did not like being told who to accept as their next man, no matter the glaring upside Reigns had.
Fans also wanted Reigns to be turned heel for the longest time. Just when it seemed like it was never going to happen the same way it didn’t for Cena, the Tribal Chief character was born and he is now the hottest thing in wrestling.
As such, the dream matches are beginning to unfold. Reigns has long been linked to a WrestleMania clash with real-life cousin The Rock and is rumoured to be main eventing SummerSlam with a returning Cena.
However, Reigns told Sports Nation that if the legends know what’s good for them, they’ll stay away.
Reigns, speaking in character, said: “Yeah, that [a match with The Rock] is a dream for a lot of our fans, but it ain’t a dream of his, you know what I mean? I get a lot of this with both Dwayne and John. These guys are doing very well for themselves, there’s no question about it.
“If I were these guys, I don’t know if I’d wanna come back and deal with me. I am a problem right now for everybody. If I were them, I’d stay on set and keep pumping out these streaming service movies.
“Don’t come to the ring… is what I would do.
Great burn – but it’s also worth noting that Reigns actually appeared in a film alongside The Rock in Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, a film said to have grossed over $760 million at the box office.
Cena has openly stated he wants to return to WWE when fans have returned and SummerSlam is the company’s first big show with a packed stadium since the pandemic began last year.
WWE returns to touring in July with Money in the Bank being the first pay-per-view. SummerSlam follows on August 21 in Las Vegas.
It’s been reported that The Rock is the plan for Reigns at WrestleMania 38 next April. WWE are hoping that the Hollywood star will appear at Survivor Series to kick that feud off and that’s also the 25th anniversary of Rock’s WWE debut.
