John Cena’s return to WWE TV appears imminent.
Rumours have been running wild for some time about when Cena would return to WWE and he has fanned the flames during talk show appearances promising that he will come back. Warning, spoilers ahead.
According to Fightful Select, the 16-time world champion is set to make his return to the company on the July 23 edition of SmackDown, the episode that follows Money in the Bank this Sunday on July 18.
The show is set to go down in Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse in Cleveland, Ohio.
WWE is welcoming fans back to their live shows starting with SmackDown this Friday, so Cena is set to make his appearance with a fully-packed arena.
Fightful Select does note that, as is usual with WWE, things could change. But as of right now, Cena is expected for that show.
Multiple reports, from names like WrestleVotes and Andrew Zarian, have confirmed that the working main event of SummerSlam this year is John Cena versus Roman Reigns.
Cena and Reigns have worked together once before back in 2017 when they had a singles match at No Mercy and Reigns was the victor.
It’s commonly believed that the reason they didn’t have that match on a grand stage or at WrestleMania was because Cena knew he would be in and out of the company at that stage and other plans were made.
A lot has changed since then. In the build-up to that match, Cena swallowed Reigns up on the microphone in many ways, but today, Reigns is the biggest star in WWE and the wrestling industry. The Tribal Chief character has allowed him to flourish.
Reigns takes on WWE Hall of Famer Edge this Sunday at Money in the Bank where he puts his Universal title on the line.
Edge won the Royal Rumble earlier this year, but never got the one-on-one match he wanted as Daniel Bryan found his way into the match.
Cena has been Focusing on his acting career and has been away from WWE TV since losing the Firefly Fun House Match to “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 36 in 2020.
